On the night when the NFL welcomed its newest stars, the Memphis Grizzlies were spurred onto a huge victory over the Los Angeles Clippers by their veteran all star forward, Zach Randolph.
Z-Bo posted a monster line of 27 points, 11 rebounds and 9/10 from the charity stripe. However the numbers don’t do his monstrous performance justice. Marc Gasol was given the much-lauded plaudits pre-game as he was awarded with DOPY award by Dikembe Mutombo. This was Randolph’s night from there on out.
Randolph gave the Clipper’s big men a torrid time all night. As the Griz welcomed L.A to the Grind-House, it was a grind-out style win for Lionel Hollins and his ball club. Randolph had a combined 26 points in the first 2 games in L.A. But it was his ineffectiveness on the boards that will have worried the Memphis coaching staff.
Oh how things change. Randolph was operating from the mid post where it is much more difficult to double and this gave him more freedom to get his offense going early. In this game it was Z-Bo who was making his face up jumpers and banging on the offensive boards(6 orebs) that had the whole team getting involved.
When your leader plays with such tenacity it can give guys off the bench much more impetus in what was a ‘must win’ game 3. The Memphis bench mob had 30 points and Pondexter had a valuable 13 off hustle and open 3’s. The passing from the high post was great to watch including this dime from Gasol to Randolph.
The series is now at 2-1 to the Clippers and Chris Paul in particular will look to have more impact on game 4 as he only had 8 points and 5 turnovers. This series is now alive and I cant wait to see how it unfolds.
Game 4 is at the Fed Ex Forum(The Grind-House) 4.30pm Eastern(9.30pm local UK) Saturday 27th April.
